Another Goodie in the WW Unstable Branch

Withak has a nice little modification added to the measure tool, it still isn't ready for the stable branch yet.  but it's potential is great.

Here we have a screen shot of the Cross Section Profile modification.  What this does is where you draw a line to measure distance, this window will show you a cross section of the elevation data.

Dejavu? Or.. You Should REALLY Check Your Ticket Info

I got pointed to this on the IRC channel today.. and I had to read both for it to catch on :)

First off we have this thread from over a year ago on the World Wind forum. It deals with people trying to find Sydney Australia and getting locations in the US.

Now we have this CNN article about a German tourist going to Sydney Australia to visit his girlfriend. But when he noticed something off on his ticket, he just ignored it... till he almost got on a plane in Portland, Oregon for Sidney, Montana.

Commercially Funded Geoblogs

Interesting post over at All Points Blog about 98% of all geoblogs are commercially funded. But from the work that Adena did in their post, looks like 77% are not even showing ads. Guess that blows the 98% number out of the water.

But lets think on "Commercially Funded", or actually "Commercially Sponsored" which is what it really would be. To be Commercially Funded/Sponsored, you are getting the funding directly from the interested company in return for talking about said company or displaying their banner on your site. But it is a relationship between you and the sponsor, and either one can pull out of the deal.
I have not seen that on the GIS related blogs I read. Instead you see an ad service such as adsense or yahoo! ads which the service scans the site and picks out keywords to display an ad on the site that closely relates to the content. Other than filtering out ads you don't want shown, the site owner has little say in what ads get shown on the site. There is no connection between you and the company, you are just a medium for them to show the ads.

Now, why have ads at all though? Well, for a blogger like myself, I have domain costs and hosting costs and that is the main reason I have the ads running. Though I liked James Fee's idea for running the ads, he saved them up for a 17" macbook pro.

So, maybe I'll do the same thing then, so here is the deal: Quicker you get me to $2899.00 for a 17" Macbook Pro, quicker I'll take the ads off :)

Five Things About Me…

Ok, James Fee pinged me a few days back.. thought about not doing it (I hate these kinds of questions.).. but what the hell. :)

  1. GIS isn't my background. Nope.. started out going into drafting (paper and pencil), went into AutoCAD.. and the last year and a half of schooling, got sick and tired of drafting and went into computers.
  2. I met Clyde Tombaugh before he passed away (Guy that found the PLANET Pluto)
  3. I have shaken President (when he was in office) Clinton's hand 3 times over the 8 years in office.  Twice in NYC and once on New Mexico.  Right place .. wrong time each time.
  4. I had Dolphins save my life when I was 10, they pushed me back to shore when I swam out too far.
  5. I HATE these kinds of questions with a passion!!!

Ok, done the deed... now to ping Daniel, Stephan and what_nick.
