NASA and Google…
Written by Chad on December 15th, 2006It seems like everyone wants to make a big deal out of the “Google and NASA deal“. While it does seem interesting.. it is nothing that can’t also be replicated in World Wind (via the KML importer or just our own XML add-on for World Wind). So it is not really limited to just Google Earth.
I looked at the news releases and the guessing of what it will do.. and it would probably work better in World Wind anyway because with the API and plug-ins.. you can change the function of World Wind to show volumetric data (so you would really fly through the climate data). And some of the World Wind devs have been wanting a challenge.
I have already sent Patrick Hogan an email about it, so I am sure the knowledge of World Wind’s existence will be soon known ;~) And I look forward to viewing the data in World Wind.

I think NASA needs a department whose only job is informing its left hand of what its right hand is doing.

so nasa makes all this lovely taxpayer-funded data available to google earth…seems only fair for google to contribute imagery/road data/etc to WW.

In reply to anonymous: they might, but only as soon as you start paying taxes to Google.
Repeat after me: Google is a business, not a charity.

Actually.. of the three main web sites that offer up high res sat images… Google is the ONLY one that says they can’t share because of their supplier. Yahoo and Microsoft somehow got less restrictive deals and CAN share the imagery.
Makes ya wonder.

What do you mean Google is the only one who can’t share because of their supplier? Can’t share their data? Can’t share suppliers? MS has an exclusive deal with GeoEye for imagery.

Actually, I beleive GeoEye is supplying both Yahoo and MS with imagery, just of different areas.
But yes, Google has said they can not let people use the imagery any way they can, if they did, Digital Globe would pull all the imagery and no one would have it. That is what Google says.. yet MS and Yahoo CAN share their imagery with others. So Google either did a) a really bad deal or b) is bending the truth a little.
