Suggestions for a World Wind Workshop

Written by Chad on January 24th, 2007

I have been invited to present and do a workstop at the 2007 FOSS4G.  Developing a presentation is the easy part.  But I would like to ask for ideas on a 3 hour workshop.

I have been tinkering with World Wind too long and I am not sure what would make a good workshop for people.  Creating add-ons?  Plug-In development?  Core code development?  Getting data into World Wind?  Lets see what others come up with.

It seems that all the views you mentioned are somewhat related to each other, though from a humble student opinion I would suggest getting data into WW and creating add-ons. Since it’s a geospatial conference, I think that what most people would like to learn about WW is how to visualize their info in the virtual globe and at the same time how to make it available to others. I hope I helped. Good luck with the workshop :)

Yea, we had discussed it on the forum and decided the best way to go is like you said, how does one get their data into World Wind. And the different kinds of data that can be shown.

Focus I’d like to see would be related to your ‘Getting data into World Wind’ item. To convince my entourage (and myself!) to using WW, I must demonstrate WW can play well with any kind of data and be used in conjunction with other geotools. Example; the VE plugin is a great small feature.

(that said, I never really used WW myself… I’m still waiting for the Java port… my goal is to make sure everybody here (government) uses WW, stressing out GE ‘Free’ can’t be used in a work environment :))

It is a good thing I have a few months to pull this all together… should keep me from pounding my head to hard into the wall.

Hopefully, I can get one or two more community members to also commit, I don’t think I could do it all on my own easily.

At least I am getting some feedback for ideas what to focus on now.
