Worst Map Ever?
Written by Chad on January 26th, 2007
I came across this on wikipedia… I don’t think I have come across a worse map than this one.

It looks like it was done in MSPaint… Just hurts the eyes to even look at it.
Anyone come across anything worse than this they want to share?

My bet is that someone “traced” a copyrighted map in MS Paint to make one that they can claim is PD for wikipedia.

I’ll play contrarian and say that despite its obvious aesthetic short-comings, this map troubles me not in the least.
Why? Because the simplistic rendering sends a clear signal how much time I should spend with the map and the degree of confidence I should put in the visual information i.e. take it for what it is and move on.
I’m much more concerned by very slick maps that visually mis-represent data to serve a polemical point, or have measuring tools that show map units to nine decimal places, or “heat maps” that create continuous surfaces of phenomena that does not occur continuously in the real world, etc., etc., etc.
