I didn't to say anything before.. as I was not sure they would go for the switch out. But they have so it is official now, I will be replacing Patrick Hogan at the Asymmetric Warfare conference on March 29th.

I will be doing a presentation on World Wind .Net and the Java version and showing off some demo material as well as both versions of World Wind.

You Have Not Lived Till….

..you have seen a Paczki-eating contest.

Yes, it is a week after Fat Tuesday... but I didn't find this little gem till today. By the way, slow and steady is how you win this race.

No, Not a “Marketing Blog”

Reguardless of what Import Cartography thinks (though I did not see that till Datum Shift posted about it, no 3DConnexion did NOT send me a SpaceNavigator just so I could give them a great writeup. They had sent me one so that I could help their developers fine tune a plug-in for World Wind so that the SpaceNavigator would work with in World Wind.

Yes, they could have done it without my assistance. But they wanted a user / developer from the World Wind community to assist them. So they contacted the NASA World Wind project manager and he in turn asked on the World Wind Developers list and I said I would help out and he let the people at 3DConnexion know I would assist them.

I never promised them anything on my blog, they never asked for anything as well. But you have to know by now that if it is World Wind related.. I am gonna talk about it :) And this makes up for what I promised I wouldn't talk about.

But really.. I am not a full "GIS Blogger/User" .. Manifold, ESRI, etc.. does not get talked about here (much)... so Manifold (or anyone else) sending me their program/product to blog about is not gonna happen, if it does, I would be more than amazed. And any other software packages I could talk about in relation to World Wind are all free to begin with, so no gain there for anyone, other than how to use it for a task.

Hopefully, this nips any ideas people had in the bud.

New Way to Look at Earthquakes

We have all seen how earthquakes are shown on virtual globes, a marker at the surface showing the position and magnatude of the earthquake.  Just like this screen shot here:

Now, how about a new way of visualizing this data?  Instead of a symbol showing the earthquake depth, we SHOW the earthquake at depth.  Observe what happens when the above view is tilted.

Now to rotate the view.  As you can see, these earthquakes are being shown at the depth they occured at.

There is still some work to do to make this version of the Earthquake plug-in's better representing of the data.  Mainly we are thinking of adding a line to the surface to help depict where there earthquake is located.

One of the other new ways of displaying the data is to use the "Beach Ball" focal mechinism, as is explained here.  You can see how NOAA uses this on this earthquake page.

Python Scripting in World Wind

First off, let me say this is VERY Alpha code so far :) But if you want to do some python scripting in World Wind (sorry, I have no examples myself of how this is useful.. But I know it is from the talk in the #worldwind and #osgeo irc channels. :)

But if you have some ideas for scripting in World Wind, check out this plug-in that is in development.

Update: What_nick has some more information and an example in his blog.

Just What Will WWJava Alpha Testers Get to Do?

Well, how about this...

ss1_thumb.jpg

This is a "pilot" view out of a rendered aircraft that is flying over a WWJava globe.

The instruments in the this view are *live* and showing real time data of a real world F-16. This fully instrumented F-16 simulation is running smooth as silk at 1920x1200 on a laptop with full screen anti-aliasing and all image quality settings set to their highest.

ss2.jpg

In this view you are Superman flying above the aircraft. Really nice 3D model rendering.. If you are going to the JavaOne conference, you can see the official unveiling then. This is a combination of NASA, Sun and GL Studio for Human Machine Interface technology, http://simulation.com/products/glstudio/glstudio.html

(wish I could go :( )

This last screen shot you are riding on the back of the plane, great view from here. Don't worry that their is no pilot.. SkyNet has everything under control ;)

ss3_thumb.jpg

This is just the latest teaser that is in the world for World Wind Java, and I am sure that all the Alpha testers (No, the picking has NOT been done yet :\ Soon, I hope.) will have many of their own ideas as well.. and hopefully some of them can share their ideas without having to kill me later. ;)

Again, if you want to see more of WWJava in person and you are not on the Alpha name list (I am only adding very special cases at this moment.. or large bribes) you can see this, AND speak to the people in charge at this year's JavaOne.
