CNN Switched to Virtual Earth?
Written by Chad on June 12th, 2008Was watching CNN while at the gym today and they were making heavy use of Virtual Earth to show regions that were being affected by the severe storms in the US of late. They used the Bird’s eye view a lot where it was available.
Now CNN use to use Google Earth a lot, and to be honest I never liked how it looked. But their use of Virtual Earth looked a lot nice and to put it plainly, more professional looking.
I am not sure if they are using both Google Earth and Virtual Earth, or if they have just switched fully to Virtual Earth.

I saw a some of CNN at about five today and they were using GE imagery (it had the copyright watermark). This was imagery of Afghanistan though, so maybe Virtual Earth in US and GE outside.

Could be.. I don’t watch a whole lot of CNN.

I noticed this with CNN recently as well - to the upper right were the very noticeable VE controls…

I noticed the switch too! I recall CNN covering the war in Iraq and seeing Google Earth. These days they are definitely using Virtual Earth. The weather channel too uses VE with the weather “layers” overlaid on top of the base map. Jim mentioned that he’s seen both GE and VE on CNN. They might just pick and choose what their base layer is based on best availability of data for that area.

We use them both at CNN, and we like them both.

Wow.. and this actually made it to someone at CNN? color me impressed.
But I still think the VE with Birds Eye is a better looking view than GE any day.

Well.. depends on how annoying the “Good Morning America” crew are… I can usually stand them… but lately they have turned into such tools.
But I only watch from 07:00 to 07:30, then I am off to work.
