I Bring You: Earth

Written by Chad on October 16th, 2008

It is 18½ × 24 inches and weighs 66 pounds.  It has 576 pages, over 750 photographs and illustrations and 160 pages of maps.

In case you have not figured it out yet I am not talking about the Earth itself, but the biggest atlas ever to be published. This is being touted as a benchmark in cartography, and at $3500.. it better be.

The book also includes four monster-sized gatefolds which, unfurled, measure six x four feet (1.82 x 1.21 meters) and reveal pinpoint sharp satellite images including shots of the earth and sky at night.

“Earth” is being published by Millenniumhouse and only 3000 (2000 standard editions, 1000 “Gold” editions) of these atlas’s are being produced.  In this age of everything being digital and virtual, it is still nice to have a good atlas to look over and hold in your hands.

“… and hold in your hands” The CNN site mentions that this handy atlas is over 30kg. So, getting the thing from the shelf / book case is already a daunting task. Let alone that your shelf must be able to hold it, without succumbing.

It is as if millions of Billy’s cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

Weight wise.. should be ok.. but the book is way to big to go on a shelf.

And are you saying you can’t lift 66lbs? That isn’t “that” heavy.

You can put it in the shelf sideways (with the cover facing you).
Getting it out of the shelf is one thing, but leafing it through while holding it in your hands is entirely different ;)

Well, this book will make all those “Girly Men” into “Strong Men” then ;)

As much as I would like to have this book.. it is about $3400 too much. :)
