News Roundup for October 9th

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Have several news posts that are WorldWind related tonight.

PIGWAD!

No, not calling you a name, that is a short name for Planetary Interactive G.I.S.-on-the-Web Analyzable Database which is run by the USGS. Now why is this interesting for WorldWind? Well, it is because the WMS server works fine in WorldWind and you can see some very interesting data line the Mars Geology data.

Mars Geology

As you can see, there are quite a few layers you can play with in WorldWind. There are also layers of data for the Moon, Venus and the Jovian Moons.

Edit:
Download the WorldWind XML for PIGWAD.

WorldWindRCP

This is a nice looking WWJava application that the EPA is developing.

The World Wind Eclipse RCP Geobrowser is an experimental geobrowser built on top of two of the best open source technologies:

  • World Wind Java SDK - http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/java/ : Allows developers can embed World Wind technology in their own applications
  • Eclipse - http://www.eclipse.org/ : Eclipse is an open source community whose projects are focused on building an open development platform comprised of extensible frameworks, tools and runtimes.

This is another example of just how “Swiss Army Knife” WWJava can be.

WorldWind Builds Server

The builds server is up and running again.. now you can try out the latest and greatest (maybe not the most stable though) :)

MODIS Hotspots/Active Fire NASA World Wind Plugin

Came across this WorldWind add-on by chance the other day. The University of Maryland FIRMS group has a WorldWind add-on to display the Last 48hours of Global Fire activity.

This works nicely in conjunction with the ESA Fire plug-in that was developed earlier this year.

Middle Earth DEM Project

This is just something that makes you go “What? o.0″ But it is a series of maps of Middle Earth loaded onto the WorldWind globe. An interesting project at least.

WW Middle Earth

WorldWind DevCon 08

Another project I am working on (because I want to be fully insane ;) ), but this will happen sometime in late 2008. I will have an official site up in a week or two. If anyone wants to help out, and knows what they are doing, drop me a line.

It’s WorldWind Now

Patrick Hogan informed me the other day (week?) that WorldWind is being referred as one word WorldWind instead of World Wind. I have not yet asked why though, I will soon.

Funded World Wind Development

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

Want to get paid for working on WWJava code?

There is lots of work to do and some additional funding independent of NASA to get it done. If you have demonstrated design skills, are fully fluent in Java and very fluent in OpenGL and would like to explore this, please send your resume to me via a private message. Thanks.

Go to tag’s user page to send him a PM.  tag by the way is the forum user name of the NASA World Wind Java developer lead, Tom Gaskins.

World Wind Java Re-Re-Re-Released

Friday, May 11th, 2007

Ok, looks like all the technical glitches have all be resolved. You can now download the SDK from the NASA World Wind Java Page. You can also access the WWJava demo from the same page.

World Wind Java is for developers to embed in their own applications. It is not an application in itself.

Brink Expedition! in World Wind

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

brinkxlogo.gifThe Brink Expedition add-on for World Wind is probably one of the more interesting add-ons I have worled on lately.  Mainly because there is such a mass of information.. but it is not highly organized or complete :)

BrinkX is a cross-globe bicyling expedition for an Australian named Kendon Glass.  He has been on this trip for a few years now and is getting ever so much closer to home.

The Brink Innovative Education project will provide the opportunity for students to learn from other cultures, promoting an understanding of, and a fascination for the complex world around them. As well, the Brink Expedition will encourage an awareness of, and a respect for the natural environment, while emphasizing the students’ role as active global citizens.

This add-on will be updated as I get more GPS location points from Kendon.  I currently have up to the middle of the Mediterranean mapped out, and he is in Cambodia now.. so I am still missing a few thousand miles of track points :)  Almost every point on the globe is clickable and links to a related journal entry (if I knew the correct oe to link to).  You can also read all of his journal entries here.

As I said before, this add-on will be updated as I get more information to add, but you will see any changes each time you load World Wind since this add-on is setup to be “Auto-Updating”.  To download the add-on, click here.  To install, unzip and copy the two folders into your <World Wind install folder>  Example: C:\Program Files\NASA\World Wind 1.4\ and start World Wind.

And before people start asking… yes I will have a Google Earth version as well.

Somalia SWALIM Add-on For World Wind

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

I think my putting out the Somalia Refugee Migration add-on finally pushed Daniel and Maurizo to finish this imagery add-on.

The Somalia add-on is a set of topographical maps covering Somalia in 100k and 200k resolution, Vector data of Mogadishu streets and general data, and displays areas affected by flooding, in addition a few areas also have othophotos provided by DigitalGlobe. The data in this add-on was obtained by Madmappers from various sources, they then processed the data and in collaboration with SWALIM,FAO and FEF put it on servers for access by World Wind users and relief agencies.

This imagery is not public domain, please see the license section for more information.

This is also the first official World Wind imagery layer to use the Digital Globe / QuickBird imagery. As of this moment it is of several small locations of Somalia. There is more to add, but it is a slow process as toes do not want to be stopped on. But this is NOT imagery from Google Earth, this imagery comes from a different route.

Here is a sample of the QuickBird imagery:

And if you can read Russian, here is what the 100k Topo maps look like:

You can download this add-on from the World Wind Central wiki page here.

World Wind Development Bounties

Monday, April 9th, 2007

Daniel clued me into a new development that is on the World Wind Forums.  A “Development Bounty” section for people that want to pay for a developer to work on / fix / add a new feature (function).

This has come up before a few times, but looks like someone actually followed through this time :)
