Mapping the iPhone

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Well, because we all know that without the iPhone, civilization will end. Wired has gone out and mapped where all the iPhone users are (really, it is a better map of just the network) in the USA.

As you can see, the east coast and breadbasket of the US have civilization as does the west coast.  But the middle of the US.. anarchy is the rule.

On a serious note, iPhone aside, (it is cool, but really.. nothing THAT special) this does show a mostly accurate map of what AT&T’s 3G coverage is.  Areas you would think to be strong are coming up as the opposite.  (As for me, I max out because at home I have an AT&T tower 900 feet away.. but other than making phone calls.. I don’t use anything else)

I am just an unfrozen caveman lawyer, you’re iPhone scares and confuses me.

OpenLayers on an iPod Touch

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

Safari doesn’t do SVG though it seems.. but a friend of mine got OpenLayers to work on the iPod Touch .. which means it would also work on an iPhone.

iPhone Airplane Advertising?

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

This is probably going to be about the only foray into the iPhone topic..  But this is just something interesting that I have heard three times at work now from people that have had flights in the last 2-3 weeks.  I have not heard or read anything about this so I wouldn’t call it confirmed of course.  But it seems that Apple and or AT&Tis putting people on flights to drum up interest on the iPhone.

I first heard about it three weeks ago when the guy across the isle from me was telling me about a flight he had to take over the weekend for a family “event”.  When he was on the plane the person that was sitting next to him took out his iPhone in the middle of the flight and started playing around / watching something.  And as soon as he glanced over, the guy started talking to him about his “new iPhone” and going on about how cool it was and all the features and then started going into how all the features worked (save for the phone part).  He even went into details and specs of the phone, which is really strange in it’s own right.   And then he handed the phone over, without prompting, and said “Here, try it out!”… I have never seen anyone take their new, $600 phone and give it to some complete stranger and say “try it out”.

We talked about that and both of us said that it sounded like a walking advertisement and it was quite odd.  Now last week I was talking to some friends that were back in the office from trips to other work sites (different flights, dates and travel locations) and they both said something similar.  They saw someone on the plane or in one case, at the terminal going on and on about their “new iPhone”.  And from what they said, it was almost the same as what the guy across the isle first told me three weeks ago.

Now, it could be just a bunch of people just REALLY stoked they are paying ~6900$ (first year) for an iPod + phone and need to show everyone.. but to have three different people, going three different ways at different dates and times and have them all saying about the same thing… stinks of advertising to me.

Steve Jobs: No One Uses Java

Monday, January 15th, 2007

James pointed me to this blog post this morning.. since I had been wondering how well WWJava would run on the iPhone (you will note I have not said word one about that “future flop”). Well, this post has a very interesting quote from Jobs..

Markoff: “And what are you thinking about Flash and Java?”

Jobs: “Java’s not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.”

Ok, Java is worthless and no one uses it…
Hey Jobs.. ever hear of a project called World Wind Java? Has a few million dollars for development and can run as a standalone application AND in a web browser.
Java is developed for and IS used by many, many people. Thank you for making me not like Apple anymore (well, the Apple commercials have made me hate Apple just by being so stupidly annoying).
