Silly Manifold Users, Google Imagery is for Google

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Came across this today.. Manifold users are still wanting to use Google Maps imagery in Manifold.

That I dont understand well is: Why Google publish a URL to make queries and his technology if they dont want that user download information (even when there are no a commercial use intend)?, just for see what big is the power of google team?

So, What Did Happen to James Fee?

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Datum Shift was the first to break this news..  After posting about someone from ESRI leaving, and then retracting the post after he found out it was wrong.. his site has now “vanished”.  So, is it an ESRI take down?  Someone from Manifold has finally snapped?  The “Men in Black”?  Or, just a “WTF?” moment?

On Manifold and World Wind……

Friday, July 13th, 2007

This came up the the #planetgeospatial channel when talking about James latest Manifold post.

[12:37]    <JamesFee>    i’ve grown tired of Manifold, i uninstalled it because the UI is so difficult to use.
[12:37]    <JamesFee>    GIMP is probably a better UI than Manifold and that says something
[12:38]    <T_Servo>    ouch
[12:40]    <JamesFee>    even World Wind has a better UI

Hmm, in which way should the World Wind devs take this.. Good that it is better than Manifold.. or Bad because he ranks it that low?

Manifold Toolbar

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Manifold has an toolbar beta out now for IE.  The Manifold Toolbar adds geographic browser capability to Internet Explorer and can be used to view Microsoft Virtual Earth imagery or any Manifold server.

You can search and go to locations by a location search or via a lat and lon location.

Now.. I am not saying they are gumpy for getting called out on the whole GE imagery issue a few weeks back but…

manifold.net recommends use of Microsoft Virtual Earth (the default installation) instead of Google servers for several reasons:

  • Virtual Earth has a more even appearance in large scales.
  • Virtual Earth does not interrupt service to active users, as Google has been known to do.
  • Virtual Earth does not “watermark” images with a disfiguring logo as Google does.
  • Virtual Earth has better resolution in many (but not all) locations.
  • Microsoft has supported developers working on alternatives to Microsoft’s own geographic browsers.
Following their “We don’t feel like making our websites usefull” standard.. there are no screen shots of the toolbar in use.  I tried installing it.. and it doesn’t work for me so I also have no screen shots to show it’s use.
