FOSS, OpenGeo, Google Earth.. huh?

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Ok, this just seems strange.. maybe it is because I am not a fanboi.. but you have the Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), OpenGeo .. these two are for the pushing of free and open software and open data, yet…

On the OpenGeo DVD you have this.  Open source software and ways to use the data openly… yet they put Google Earth on there which is closed source, and not open data (yes you can see it, but you can’t use it openly outside of Google Earth).

Congress Pushes for Open Source Use

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

The Government Computer News website has an interesting article posted, an article that is good news for Open Source.

OPERATIONAL RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT, TEST, AND EVALUATION

Open Source Software Systems
The committee is concerned by the rising costs and decreasing security associated with software development for information technology (IT) systems. These rising costs are linked to the increasing complexity of software, which has also resulted in increasing numbers of system
vulnerabilities that might be exploited by malicious hackers and potential adversaries. While the Administration has put forth a plan to increase cyber-security within the larger enterprise of federal IT systems, a focus and assessment of fundamental software engineering practices is not apparent.

Open source software (OSS) is a set of practices on how to write software, based on the open availability and right to use software code. This process provides greater rigor in the software development process by making it available to a diverse community of programmers for review, testing, and improvement. The Linux operation system and Internet Protocol internet addressing system are examples of high quality products developed within the business sector using the OSS standard.

The committee encourages the Department to rely more broadly on OSS and establish it as a standard for intra-Department software development.  The committee acknowledges the availability of proprietary software and encourages its development and acquisition as necessary and appropriate. The committee believes, however, the wide-spread implementation of an OSS standard will not only lead to more secure software, but will also foster broader competition by minimizing traditional constraints imposed by an overreliance on proprietary software systems.

This is nothing exacly new, I had posted an article before (can’t find it in my own archives though) about the DOD demanding the use of more Open Source software.

Multitouch Demo with WorldWind

Monday, September 1st, 2008

Two really nice videos of NASA WorldWind running on a multi-touch setup with touch control.  touchEarth is a Nasa World Wind TUIO gestures based MT application developed in C#. It contains all the regular gestures to zoom/Rotate/tilt and pan using various 1, 2 and 3 finger gesture combinations.

Yahoo! Brickhouse Video of the WorldWind Presentation

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

A few weeks back, I posted that Patrick Hogan and Randy Kim were at the Yahoo! Brickhouse talking about WorldWind Java. The video of that presentation has been posted online now. It is about 45 minutes long and is not “that” great in the video quality (bad lightning), but has some interesting information and insights.

Google Summer of Code 2008: The List

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Well, the Google SoC list is out for 2008.. and again no WorldWind (Free Earth Foundation) this year.  But, two GIS related groups are in the list:

There is some talk of using FEF money to pay for a Java developer to release a standalone, WWJava client for the masses to use.
